What did I learn?

Coaching football has been an incredible blessing in my life.  When I first started coaching at the end of practice as the boys were all taking a knee looking up at me, I asked them the question..."So what did you learn today?" Surprisingly I got more than I ever imagined. Hands shot up from just about every player and it seemed to go on and on and on. I realized in that moment how great it was to hear what they learned because not only did it reinforce the lessons for them it also reinforced it for the other players as well. It has become now a tradition after every practice or game that I ask  3 volunteers to tell me what they learned.  Though not like the first practice I still have more than 3 responses every time.

As I was watching football today it struck me that I need to ask myself that same question every day. Then I need to be willing to share that...it may be silly, it may be serious, but there should be at least 3 things that I learn in the course of the 17 or so hours of time that I am awake. So here goes...

1)  An NFL program on Brandon Marshall and his struggle with BPD...This is a real thing and it amazes me how there are so many things that can be learned from someone's struggles and that humility and reaching out for help really becomes a source of strength.

2) Rambutans are a fruit that looks like a a thorny sea urchin. Inside the fruit tastes like a grape. It is a reminder that things aren't always what they seem. Some of the sweetest things have a thorny ugly outside. Yes that's a metaphor for lots of things in this life.

3) Reading in the book "Love Does" by Bob Goff. When you do things without an agenda and really just try to be friends...amazing things happen oh and that Bob Goff considers Tom Sawyer's island at Disneyland his office...so freaking cool!! He is my new hero.
