"If a man hasn't discovered something he will die for, he isn't fit to live."
― Martin Luther King Jr.
1 CHRONICLES 6-7
The listing of the tribes and their duties...
31These are the men David put in charge of the music in the house of the Lord after the ark came to rest there. 32They ministered with music before the tabernacle, the tent of meeting, until Solomon built the temple of the Lord in Jerusalem. They performed their duties according to the regulations laid down for them.
Jesus continues to debate with the Jewish leaders...JOHN 8:21-36
31To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples.32Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”33They answered him, “We are Abraham’s descendants and have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?”
JOURNAL
God had specific purposes for each of the Israelite tribes. Each of them had gifts and contributed in their own specific way. They were also done by tribe so I can only imagine the power of having your whole tribe and decedents trained in a particular skill.
Jesus is speaking of spiritual freedom. Freedom of the mind and heart. The Jews keep thinking he is speaking of physical and it makes sense that they are confused because all old testament traditions come in the form of the physical...from sacrifices to lineage to duties etc.
I take away from this that God has a specific purpose for me. That each person born on this earth is intentional and by surrendering to the spirit of God, will find the truth about that purpose.

14For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God. 15The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship.f And by him we cry, “Abba,g Father.” 16The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. 17Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.- ROMANS 8:14-17
