AUGUST 22, 2020

“You may encounter many defeats, but you must not be defeated. In fact, it may be necessary to encounter the defeats, so you can know who you are, what you can rise from, how you can still come out of it.”

― Maya Angelou

JEREMIAH 7-8

Obey me, and I will be your God and you will be my people. Walk in obedience to all I command you, that it may go well with you. (7:23)

1 TIMOTHY 2

1I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people— 2for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. 3This is good, and pleases God our Savior, 4who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth. 5For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus, 6who gave himself as a ransom for all people.

JOURNAL

Today, right now, this moment. God is here with me...he is no longer in the past, he is in the present. This has been a difficult thing for me to let go of. I find that my mind often wanders to the past and thinks about how things could be different. The past is permanent, it cannot be changed, it is what it is. Yet God has given us a record of his involvement with man so that we may learn and live more fully in the present.

Those words are from last year's journal entry. The truth of those words could not be any more profound this morning. After Eli's injury last night my mind kept going back to how could this be different, wishing that if I just rewound the play again it could somehow change the outcome. I thought about how hard he's worked, about what he's overcome to get to this point. I thought about this whole year and the doubt of even getting to play and then the excitement of finally taking the field...on and on my mind spun. Yet what he said in those moments just after ring so true to God and scripture, "Dad, it's just like a game, things go wrong and you just keep pushing forward".

Today is what we are given and today God asks for us to love him, trust him and receive his love so that it may be shared with a world that's lost and in pain. This is the gospel, it is God's word and it's truth is powerful and keeps us focused forward. Yes we learn from the past...but it cannot be changed..."the past is permanent" but today, this moment is full of possibility and it is in this moment that I must live and love and persevere,

9Know therefore that the Lord your God is God; he is the faithful God, keeping his covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his commandments.
